What's the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

We keep your financial records accurate and current all year long — categorizing transactions, reconciling accounts, running payroll, and producing reports. Your accountant uses those clean books to file your taxes and offer high-level strategy. We work directly with your accountant so everything's ready and tax season runs smoothly.

Do you only work with businesses in Massachusetts and Idaho?

Not at all. We're based in Brimfield, MA and Oakley, ID, but we work with clients anywhere in the U.S. Most of our work happens securely online, so your location is never a barrier.

We work in the cloud platforms small businesses count on — QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Time, Gusto, Wave, Slack, and Google — and we'll always recommend the best fit for your business rather than forcing one setup on everyone. If you're brand-new to QuickBooks Online, we can pass along a first-time subscriber discount.

How do I know if I'm a good fit for Haystack?

If you're a small business — even a one-person shop — without enough work for a full-time bookkeeper, or you have staff who are too busy to keep up with the books, you're a great fit. So are businesses that need part-time support without hiring someone on, businesses where the billing's handled but the bookkeeping has become too much, and larger companies that need occasional or task-specific help. And if we're honestly not the right fit, we'll tell you and point you toward a better option — Tamara only takes on work where she can genuinely help.

Yes — this is one of our specialties. We regularly take on catch-up and clean-up work, get everything reconciled and accurate, and then keep it that way going forward. No judgment; we've seen it all.

Do you do my taxes?

We don't file income tax returns — that's your accountant's job. What we do is get everything in perfect order to hand off, and we often coordinate directly with your accountant to make sure transactions are categorized exactly how they want them. Tax season becomes a simple hand-off instead of a fire drill.
